For the members of the Congregation Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in East Lansing, Michigan, early intervention by law enforcement brought a wave of relief and comfort when they arrested 19-year-old Seann Pietela. Following his alleged plans to commit violent acts rooted in neo-Nazi ideology, antisemitism, and a desire to glorify and mimic past mass shooting events, the FBI arrested Pietela and took him into custody.
The FBI was notified of his concerning social media posts and communications that expressed admiration for previous mass shooters, as well as his various antisemitic comments as to how and why he planned to carry out the attack. Following the alerts of these communications, the FBI operated to confirm his real identity and arrest him. Per charging documents, once they arrived at his home, they found multiple unsecured guns, as well as tactical gear and a Nazi flag. A sweep of his phone was also conducted, where various messages and notes written by Pietela were found detailing locations and dates of when he planned to carry out acts of violence.
While Pietela told investigators he did not intend to carry out the attack, he was charged in a criminal complaint with transmitting a communication containing a threat to injure another. Court records state he faces up to five years in federal prison and up to three years of supervised release if convicted. Pietela is scheduled for a detention and preliminary hearing on June 22nd, 2023 in federal court in Grand Rapids, MI.
