Too many fractures could lead to a child abuse investigation

If there is one thing that’s true, it’s that kids often get themselves into trouble. Whether they climb somewhere they aren’t supposed to or run out into the road unexpectedly, kids are more likely to find themselves in dangerous situations that result in them suffering injuries more than older people.

Unfortunately, as their parent, you may face abuse allegations if your child suffers multiple injuries in quick succession. For example, if your child falls and breaks their arm, you’ll have to take them to the hospital. It’s unlikely that the first time will raise any red flags. However, doctors might start asking questions if you have to take your child to the emergency room for two or more fractures in the same year.

Injuries may lead to legal trouble

Any suspected wrongdoing may expose you to legal liability. The hospital may contact Child Protective Services and attempt to have your child removed from your home.

You’ll need to take steps to avoid having this happen to you. You must be able to explain how your child suffered their injuries. You’ll also need to prepare should you need to defend yourself against false allegations.

Accidents happen. Kids fall on playgrounds, off their bikes and down the stairs. They suffer injuries in fights and get hurt in other ways. Your child’s injuries shouldn’t automatically place you under suspicion, especially when it’s clear that you’re not trying to hide anything by taking them for medical treatment after an incident.

You must know your rights if you’re facing an investigation. An attorney can advise you of your rights in your case. Your lawyer can also protect you and your child from false accusations and potential separation.
