How do federal officials investigate crimes?

As you might suspect, federal crimes are typically more serious than state crimes. Federal officials devote substantial resources to both the investigation and prosecution of federal crimes, so know that if you are arrested and charged with an offense, you need to take the matter seriously.
In a federal crime, the investigating agency takes several steps to shore up its case against you. In white-collar crimes, this means collecting the paper trail it needs to prove their allegations. If it a drug distribution crime or other drug-related offense, they often will try to convince other individuals involved in the “conspiracy” to testify against you.
Understand that even if the government has seemingly an open and shut case, there are things that you can do to fight back. With an experienced attorney, there are steps that one can take in building a defense against the allegations, including:
- Examining the evidence that police have to use against you to determine if it was properly collected
- Reviewing the facts of the crime to see if the allegations of wrongdoing are warranted
- Checking to see that the police followed all procedures while investigating your case
- Negotiating with the government to reduce the potential charges or sentence
If you receive any notice that there is an investigation pending against you, it is important to seek legal counsel as soon as possible. The prosecutors and law enforcement agencies may have had a substantial head start before you are made aware that you are a target in an investigation. Do not talk to police or investigators until you have an experienced lawyer working on your behalf.
