Suffering from domestic abuse? It may be time to make that call

“It’s hard when you love someone…I didn’t want to cause problems for him. I just wanted him to go.”

Sound familiar? If you are a victim of domestic violence, you likely know what this Detroit survivor of domestic abuse means. So you stick it out, after all, that’s what you do when you love someone — you accept their faults. Or that’s what your partner tells you.

There is nothing easy about reporting your partner. There is nothing easy about making that decision to tear your relationship apart. Unfortunately, if you have an abusive partner, they know that, too. In fact, they are relying on you to be “too weak” to make that call.

Domestic abusers are experts at manipulation, at making you increasingly dependent on them. They are experts at making it harder and harder for you to pick up the phone and put a stop to it.

How long are you prepared to wait? Are you willing to put up with more verbal and emotional abuse? Are you going to wait until they physically beat you? That is what it took for the woman in the article to report her partner.

If you suffer domestic abuse at the hands of your partner, it has probably been more difficult than ever these last few weeks. This a time of significant change for many people; maybe it is time you made a change to your life, too. If you want confidential and compassionate legal advice in the Bloomfield Hills area, pick up the phone and make that call. We’re here to help you.
