Michigan man sentenced again on child porn charges

A Michigan man who spent 10 years in prison and was on supervised release is going back to federal prison on child pornography charges.

The man, 66, lives in the northern part of Michigan. In 2006, he received the initial 10-year sentence, plus nine years of supervised release. Under the terms of his release, the man was not allowed to have a cellphone that could access the internet.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Grand Rapids, a probation officer visited the man’s house in 2019 as part of his supervised release. While there, the officer found the man had two cellphones, both of which had internet access, as well as 32 memory cards.

Upon investigation, authorities found that the phones and memory cards had more than 2 million “sexually suggestive images of children,” which included hundreds of images of child pornography.

The man was sentenced in federal court to serve 10 more years in prison as well as one more year for violating the terms of his release by possessing child pornography. The judge also ordered the man to spend the remainder of his life on supervised release after he is released from prison.

The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, which is a nationwide program that was formed to protect kids from online exploitation and abuse.

Child pornography charges carry severe penalties if a person is convicted. Those facing such charges require vigorous legal representation from the time the charges are filed through the trial. Prison time and a lifetime spent on the sex offender registry are at stake.
