What sort of problems lead to familial violence?

The holidays this year are going to be different from other years. But the tension in your home could be higher than ever. Without so many friends and relatives around the table or the TV watching the big games, families may feel the fracture of emotions even more than they normally do.

The stressors and tensions that accompany many holidays can sometimes lead to allegations of domestic abuse. It is important to remember that one does not have to cause physical harm to another to be charged with domestic abuse.

Domestic violence seldom happens in a vacuum. There are a lot of situations that increase familial pressure and lead to problems that erupt into violence. For example:

Excessive alcohol consumption

Drinking too much alcohol can affect people adversely. Alcohol can make some people more aggressive and it can also bring out emotions in people they don’t share when they are sober. In some situations, this can be a precursor to charges of domestic violence.

Overspending

The holidays are a time when many people overspend on gifts and meals and other extras. While that is fine if one can afford it, if money is already tight, it can be a disaster. Overspending is a frequent cause of couples’ arguments, which might, unfortunately, escalate to allegations of domestic abuse.

Unemployment

Many families are suffering because the family breadwinner has been furloughed from their jobs. This can cause enormous stress on the entire family and in some situations can bring about accusations of domestic violence.

Understanding the causes of domestic violence can help you take a step back and keep the frustrations you experience in perspective. Sometimes, knowing that there are likely to be tensions in the household can help you plan ahead to take a break, use coping methods and avoid unnecessary conflicts. If you are involved in an incident that leads to charges, however, make sure that you move quickly to speak with an experienced defender.
