Can you avoid made-up child abuse allegations?

The unfortunate reality is that people do make up child abuse allegations when nothing actually happened. This is a big issue during divorce cases, for instance, when your soon-to-be-ex may claim that you abused the children in order to keep you from getting custody. You know you did nothing wrong, but the court takes these allegations seriously. After all, they want to put the children first.
Can you avoid a situation like this? Possibly. If your ex is malicious and dead-set on lying to defame your character, you may not be able to stop them. Instead, you need to know how to react. However, use these tips to make fake claims less likely:
- Avoid bringing up any topics that people could take as inappropriate, even if you’re joking.
- Try to make sure other adults are around when you’re with the children, so they can back up your story.
- Listen to your spouse and try to work with them to get through the divorce on good terms so that they never want to make these allegations.
- Demonstrate through the rest of your actions around the children that you love them and you would never do anything to harm them.
Again, though, even these helpful tips do not guarantee you won’t find yourself facing serious allegations. Not only may you risk losing access to your children, but you could find yourself facing criminal charges. When things start spiraling out of control, you must know what legal options you have to defend yourself and what steps you can take.
